A tooth extraction is either simple or surgical. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible in the mouth using forceps after the area is numbed. A surgical extraction is used for a broken, impacted or fragile tooth that needs a small incision. Local anesthesia is standard, with sedation available for anxious patients. Aftercare centers on protecting the blood clot that forms in the socket, which is why patients are told not to smoke, use straws or spit for the first 24 hours.
